English Language Arts
Our class will use Junior Great Books in addition to the regular ELA curriculum. This is wonderful literature written by masters and are classics. Before, during, and after reading each story we will focus on specific questions, and participate in "Shared Inquiry." This type of Socratic discussion translates into a deeper understanding of the literature and increases comprehension.
Students will be required to complete at least one book per month and take an AR test when finished. They must receive 70% or greater to get credit for reading. Second graders are required to read 20 minutes every night as homework. They would benefit greatly if this reading time were completed with a parent to help the students increase understanding and share stories and books that our students like to read.
