Math

With Common Core State Standards you may see math look and sound a little different these days. Students will be encouraged to collaborate with peers, try different strategies using all sorts of manipulatives, and being asked to prove their answers before they see any worksheets or practice books. This approach to math deepens the students' understanding of number sense, patterns, and higher order thinking.

JiJi math, or ST Math, is still active at Newland. We will go to the Computer Lab twice a week to work on JiJi as well as in Math Centers during class. JiJi is so important to student understanding in math, I will also assign it as homework. Log into STMath.com and use our Newland activation code below to log on. Your student has a unique password that will allow him/her to continue where they left off.

There may be math homework Monday through Thursday to practice our "Number Families." I expect my students to become fluent in many skills and would like them to get help at home when they need practice.
