Letter From Newland's Principal

Dear Newland Families:

I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Newland Community for your ongoing understanding and flexibility during this unique and unprecedented time. Ensuring the health and well-being of our students, staff and community remains our top priority, which, ultimately, resulted in the decision to close all FVSD schools from Monday, March 16 to Friday, March 27, 2020. At this time, our preschool and CDC programs will not operate during the closure period, but please know that this situation could change, too. In addition, this will give our community a moment to pause, slow down and check-in with family, friends and loved ones, as the information regarding this situation has been changing by the hour. The Newland Community is a very special place and I know that we will get through this together, as we have any challenge in our history.

Student Learning This Week

While our schools will be closed, our work at Newland goes on. For this week, March 16th- March 20th, we have developed the attached document with optional resources for students in various content areas. We are doing everything we can to make sure our students stay connected and learning. We will continue to adapt our plans as things evolve in this rapidly changing situation.

Distance Learning, Beginning March, 23rd

At this time, teachers will be working remotely to develop a distance learning program for our students. In addition, we will send a message to families on Friday with an update on distance learning. Please know that some of the learning activities will require technology for students to complete, while others will be available for parents to print at home or pick-up at school.
Technology Access

For those who need them, Chromebooks will be available for checkout at each school, beginning Monday, March 23rd. I will send more information on how to obtain one in Friday’s update. If you don't have internet access at home, we are working with local companies to provide free internet access (we will provide more information on this later this week).
Food and Nutrition

We understand that school meals are important in meeting the nutritional needs for many of our students. We are preparing a drive-up meal distribution system for all students. Meal distributions will be located at Cox, Oka and Tamura elementary schools, beginning Wednesday, March 18th 2020 for all children 18 and under. Specific information about pickup instructions will be shared with all families this evening. Please see the attached document for more information.
Ongoing Communication

We will continue to keep you informed with ongoing messages and updates from our district, as well as myself. In addition, please continue to check our website at www.fvsd.us
We realize that coping with an abrupt change like this presents an extraordinary challenge for all of us and that it would not be possible without your steadfast patience and trust in our efforts. Given the rapidly evolving nature of this crisis, we cannot be certain about the weeks ahead, but we know that together we will do our absolute best for kids!
For questions, please email help-newland@fvsd.us. This email will be checked daily.
